Tour Plan
  • Day 1: Riyadh
Arrive in Riyadh and transfer to the Hotel, where we stay for two nights.
  • Day 2: Riyadh
Leave after breakfast for a visit to the well laid out National Museum, with displays of ethnography and antiquities. After lunch visit the preserved ruins of the old town of Dirriyah , the mainly 19th century former capital of the Saudi family. Return to Riyadh in the evening to visit the Musmak Fortress Museum and the nearby market in the evening light, then on to dinner at the traditional Saudi style restaurant.
  • Day 3: Riyadh - Jouf
Leave after breakfast for the airport to catch the flight to Sakkaka (al-Jouf), arriving and Proceed first to al-Jouf Museum for a preview of the antiquities of the Jouf region, one of the most important regions in the history of Arabia. Continue on to the Hotel, where we stay for 1 night, to check in and for lunch. After lunch drive to the citadel of Qasr Za’abal, the restored ancient fort overlooking the town.
  • Day 4: Jauf - Tabuk
A long day by road 470 km through desert to Tabuk in the Hejaz. About 50 km outside Sakkaka is the site of Doumat al-Jandal, one of the most important centers on the caravan trade between the Mediterranean and South Arabia in the last few centuries BC and first few centuries AD, although its history in both Biblical and Assyrian accounts goes back a thousand years earlier. The most important remains are the fortress of Qasr al-Marid on a rocky outcrop, which goes back to Nabataean times, and the traditional old town of Doumat al-Jandal itself, parts of which are believed to be up to a thousand years old although the presence of re-used Nabataean inscriptions make it even older. Lunch will be a picnic. Tabuk was one of the more important stops on the Hejaz Railway. Stay for 2 nights at Hotel
  • Day 5: The Red Sea
A very early start for a long day’s excursion (over 500 km round trip) down through the spectacular red sandstone Wadi Hisma to the Red Sea. At near Bir Ibn Hirmas are some Bronze Age and Nabataean remains. On the way down the wadi visit the Nabataean rock-cut tombs of al-Bad or Mughair Shuaib, similar to those at Mada’in Saleh and Petra. There will be a picnic lunch on the beach from where, if it is clear, there will be views across the Gulf of Aqaba to Sinai.
  • Day 6: Tabuk - Al Ula
Drive through the ancient heart of the Hejaz to the ancient Lihyanite capital of al-Ula (492 km). Much of the day will be taken up by visiting the archaeological site of Taima about halfway. Taima was for a brief time chosen by King Nabonidus in the 6th century BC as the capital of the Babylonian Empire, but even before then it was an important stopping place for the ancient caravans when it figure in both Biblical and Assyrian accounts. Our visit will start with the site museum and then our site visit will include a restored section of the ancient city walls, the Qasr al-Hamra or ‘Red Palace’, a sacred site of the 6th century BC, and the ancient cemeteries. Lunch will be a picnic. Continue on to al-Ula for 3 nights at Hotel.
  • Day 7: Al-Ula
A full day exploring the oasis of al-Ula and its remains. Al-Ula is one of the most ancient centers in the Hejaz, occupying a strategic position on the trade routes that connected the ancient civilizations of South Arabia, Mesopotamia and the Levant. Our visit will start with the al-Ula Museum, then proceed to al-Khuraybah, capital of the little known Lihyanite Kingdom between the 6th and 2nd centuries BC. Here we see spectacular rock-cut remains that anticipated the later Nabataeans, mainly in the form of tombs cut into the cliff face. After lunch and a short rest back in the hotel, we then explore the lovely old abandoned town of al-Ula, said to be on the site of Biblical Dedan. Overnight will be in hotel.
  • Day 08: Al Ula - Maidan e Saleh
A full day tour of the spectacular Nabataean site of Mada’in Saleh, second only to Petra itself for its tomb facades cut into the sandstone cliffs. Indeed, Mada’in Saleh may have been the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom for a short while just BC. Like Petra it is spectacularly situated in sandstone desert surroundings, and the 80 or so tombs are spread out over a fairly wide area. Back to hotel for dinner and overnight.
  • Day 09: Ai Ula - Jeddah
Take flight after breakfast to Jeddah. Stay overnight in Hotel.
  • Day 10: Jeddah
Full day in Jeddah, sightseeing of the city with shopping.
  • Day 11: Jeddah
A fairly leisurely last day in Jeddah. The old city of Jeddah is superbly well preserved, retaining its character and its lovely traditional Red Sea port architecture. We will explore the old town on foot, visiting some of the preserved old traditional houses. The afternoon will be free, and in the evening we have a final dinner in an outside restaurant.
  • Day 12: Jeddah - Flyback
Depart to Airport for the flight back home.
